The historic city of Bern is home to Switzerland’s Federal Palace also known as the Swiss Parliament Building and was dedicated in 1902. Visitors to the Swiss Parliament should pay particular attention to the large stained glass dome in the building’s entryway. A great place to people watch and enjoy some of the local flavor is the Café de Pyrenees which is an eclectic mix of Parisian and Bohemia cultures. Bern is also home to several museums, and they can all be found in the Helvetiaplatz district of town. Included in the area’s museums are the Bern Natural History Museum and the Einstein Museum which is where the genius first discovered his theory of relativity in 1905. The Munster gothic cathedral was constructed during the height of the 15th century and still stands as the tallest in Switzerland with its 100 meter spires. Nature lovers will enjoy all of the activities on Gurten Hill. During the winter season guests can go sledding and skiing down the hilly slopes while the warm spring and summer months open up miles of hiking and biking trails along with the return of the summer circus. Bern was named after the area’s population of bears, and visitors can still see five of the city’s bears at Barengraben. Just up the hill from the bear caves are the stunning beautiful rose garden and its magnificent view of the city. Farther down is the University Botanical Garden which is worth a visit any time of the year. One of the star attractions at the Botanical Gardens is their horrible smelling Corpse Flower. While they may have one of the world’s largest, it still does not make it smell any better. During the spring months the grounds are covered with wild flowers, including anemones, painted daises and bright yellow coreopsis.
