Team Building and Employee Engagement Day

As the owner of a small company in Crawley I am always looking for ways to improve morale and make my staff happy at their jobs. Sometimes I send fruit baskets or flowers for a job well done. Annually, I present awards at our Christmas party for everything from the highest sales, or most improvement, to most efficient software user.

I just mean that it is important to me that my people are happy. I find that the happier they are with their jobs, and me as their boss, the more efficient they work, and the more likely they are to stay in their positions longer term. I know that my staff turnover is much lower than all of my competitors and I believe it is because of this.

Forest Outing for Improved Team Work

After my young son had a birthday party at Go Ape in the middle of Tilgate Park, I decided to try the same venue for part of my annual staff team building meetings. Most of the time in the meetings we were in a building and at tables with speakers, you know, all the usual things. But for one afternoon we all went together to Go Ape.

I found that this afternoon managed to bond the team in a way that no other activity has ever done. The individual staff members are beyond that and have become a team of colleagues now. I’m not sure how a thrill in Tree Top adventures can increase the communication between departments, but it has.

Each team member now proudly displays their Go Ape Certificate of Achievement, framed, on their office wall. The zip lines and crazy bridge crossings, tightropes, high ropes, tunnels and the other assorted amazing activities have been a real benefit to my organization. Worth every penny and every second.

I’ll still send flowers and fruit baskets, though.
