Mannheim may not be on many people’s tour itineraries when heading to Germany, however there are actually plenty of interesting things to see and do in the city and surrounding area. Mannheim Palace is not only worth a look for its architecture, it also has plenty of artifacts on display. The Friedrichsplatz boasts an interesting old water tower and in the summer months the flower beds are full of colorful flowers to be enjoyed. There is also a rose garden nearby, so flower lovers will be able to enjoy a bit of time here smelling the roses. If flowers are your thing then perhaps head on over to Luisenpark. This pleasant area of Mannheim has lots to offer, with a Chinese tea house and a lake on which you can boat. The conservatory here is stuffed with exotic plants and flowers, and the well-tended lawns are an excellent place at which to have a family picnic. The Luisenpark is also a favorite place amongst locals and visitors alike in which to experience the cherry blossom season at its best. Flower lovers can also head over to nearby Heidelberg and visit its Botanic Gardens. There is an interesting bonsai garden here which is an oddity to be explored, and the greenhouse has lots of weird and wonderful exotic plants to see, including some splendid orchids. Elsewhere in Heidelberg there is a bonsai museum, so if it is plants that you like to see when in a city then Mannheim’s location near to beautiful Heidelberg is perhaps the place for you!
