Santo Domingo de los Colorados, usually just called Santo Domingo, is a city in northwestern Ecuador. The name Santo Domingo de los Colorados – “Santo Domingo of the Dyed” – derives from a cultural custom men in the Tsachila ethnic group practice, wherein, using extracts from the achiote shrub, they dye their hair red. The group is the area’s indigenous group, and the name honours them. Additionally, a statue in Santo Domingo’s city centre recognizes and honours them. Santo Domingo, like many other cities that lie west of the Andes Mountains, has a higher tendency to flood. Flowers that can be found in and around Santo Domingo, such as in the Santo Domingo Botanical Garden, include heliconias, orchids, roses, hibiscus, lavender, and a wide variety of others.
