Located along the Trans-Siberian Railway, the city of Irkutsk has a population of more than 500,000 and is a great place to stop for those taking a trip on the railway or visiting through other means! The city is stuffed with great historical sites, including the striking Prince Vladimir Monastery, which is an awesome sight not only from the outside but also indoors. History lovers can visit the Irkutsk Regional Museum to get a sense of the history and culture of the region, but it is those who love the nature and outdoor landscape of the Siberia region that may be the most impressed with Irkutsk and the surrounding region. About an hour’s drive away is the amazing Lake Baikal, which is known within Russia and beyond for its frozen waves during the coldest weather. Back closer to Irkutsk are the great thermal baths of the Arshan Resort at which you can catch some relaxation. Flower lovers will also be surprised in Irkutsk - the Irkutsk Botanical Gardens contain gorgeous Asian themed gardens, including a Japanese Garden and a Korean Garden, as well as an Apothecary Garden. There is a healthy collection of tropical plants to be found here, with over five thousand different plants, trees and flowers on display, including many endangered shrubs and other greenery from the region. The Botanic Flower Gardens runs “seeding fairs” in the spring and autumn during which members of staff are on hand to give advice on which shrubs and perennials are best suited to the local climate. There are also over two hundred and fifty types of fruit trees and berry plants and an additional area dedicated to medicinal plants, which currently has nine species growing there. Take some time to stroll around the grounds and enjoy the scenery, perhaps stopping to take a few photos along the way.
