Kawagoe is lucky enough to have nearby Tsutsujigaoka Park. With more than 10,000 azalea flower bushes, of more than 50 different kinds, the 11 hectare park won the honourable prize, the first place ribbon, at the International Garden and Greenery Exposition.
It is said that some of the wild azalea trees are up to a thousand years old in the Tsutsujigaoka Park with one giant azalea bush over five meters (16 feet!) tall, and the tunnel of azaleas tunnel for visitors to pass through.
There is an Azalea Festival every year from the middle of April until the middle of May. During that time the park does charge admission, but the rest of the year there is no entrance fee.
In the summer, you can ride on a boat that floats among the lotus flowers for a half an hour as they bloom in the castle swamp. The boat pushes through the crowds of lotus blossoms, while the breeze refreshes the passengers even on the sunniest days.
By noon the lotus flowers have passed their peak, so to see them at their best early boarding on the lotus flower boat is recommended.
The castle swamp is loaded with lotus flowers so you can see the famous, ancient flowers up close in Tsutsujigaoka Park in the town of Kawagoe.
