Situated in Finhaut, Chatelard is a small townland in the west of Switzerland. This tiny little hamlet only has around four hundred people living there. The settlement is almost entirely French speaking, given its location within Switzerland close to the French border. The main attraction here is the Parc d’attractions which boasts a cable car and train, as well as of course stunning views. The cable car is the country is steepest and with a train going around the top of the mountain once you get there you can be sure of a thrilling ride. If you have an appetite after all of that mountain air you can dine in the restaurant on site! The views are simply out of this world and you can see Mont Blanc from nearly every angle. Situated at the border between France and Switzerland, Chatelard offers a great choice of hiking routes just waiting to be explored. The flower lover will be particularly delighted here – and wildflower spotting is a great way to pass the time on a challenging hike. Look out for the native flowers that spread across the French and Swiss Alps. In the springs and summer months you will see the Alpine Pasque easily, as well as gentians and of course Edelweiss. The Martagon Lily makes an appearance later in the season, usually in July, as does Cobweb Houseleek. You can go for hours in the Alps and still spot new flowers and alpine shrubs that you had not noticed before. If you are in the Alps near Chatelard later on – from September to October never fear – you will still see the Alpine Crocus in full bloom as well as potentially the Rosebay Willowherb. These all make for beautiful photographs as you hike around. Make sure you take that camera with you if you want to capture the results!
