The ancient city of Foggia can trace it’s routes back to 1069. It is aptly named because the Latin name “fovea” means pit and as the city was the main wheat market of Italy large holes had been dug in the streets to house the grain which had been harvested. Unfortunately most of Foggia was destroyed when a powerful earthquake struck the city in 1731. It suffered further damage during the second world war so having been re-developed is now quite a modern city. Amazingly, however the cathedral Madonna Dei Sette Veli which was rebuilt in Romanesque style after the earthquake is still in tact. Pop inside to see the statue Icona Venere which, as the story goes, was found by shepherds in nearby marshland. Other architectural delights include the Church of San Tomasso, Palazzo Belvedere and Teatro Giordano. Head to the Piazza Umberto Giordano to shop in the boutiques or grab a coffee and take a seat in the pedestrianised zone, or have a meal in one of the many cafes or restaurant. Bring your camera and travel the short distance to Gargano National Park. Take in the scent of the citrus and pine trees as you enjoy observing the flora and fauna of the flower filled meadows. Wild orchids grow in abundance and nature lovers will be thrilled to see violas, cyclamen, campanula and ivy in the undergrowth.
