On the River Derwent one can find the city of Derby and Melbourne Hall. The historic manor home and its gardens are open to the public and well worth taking a tour. The front gardens boast a well manicured lawn, along with neat rows of hedges. There are old oak and maple trees on the ground that turn brilliant colors in the fall. In the shaded areas one can often find violets and hostas blooming, along with red and pink bleeding hearts and delicate lady slippers. Large hydrangea and rhododendron bushes bloom in the spring and summer, along with a profusion of tall daylilies. Cannas are another common sight in the summer, along with purple coneflowers and brown eyed susans. Other favorite flowers with visitors are the three colored trinomas and large clumps of light pink astilbe. Phlox, petunias and pansies can also be found, and many of these flowers can be seen growing in private gardens around the city. Residents in Derby enjoy growing delphinium and larkspur, along with double bloom hollyhocks. Lavender is a favorite in the springtime and one can often find the dried stalks for sale in the local shops
