Half a million people live on the river Sura in the city of Penza, which finds itself just over six hundred kilometers from Moscow city. Since the city was established in the 17th Century, there are lots and lots of interesting older buildings waiting to be explored, some of which date back to the 1600s when the city was established as a fortress town. The old meat market is extremely pretty, and you could lose yourself for hours walking along the old streets. The Penza Street Museum is a good place to visit if you find yourself in Penza for the day, as is the Folk Museum, which is especially interesting for those who like to learn about the culture and history of a city. As in many big Russian Cities there is a puppet theatre, and you can also visit the Penza Railway Museum since the city is an important railway hub. For those on the search for greenery and flowers in Penza then look no further than the beautiful Botanic Gardens of Penza. Here you will find a pretty Japanese Garden with the usual Asiatic garden plants and shrubs, including a cherry tree. The Botanic Flower Gardens are a lovely place to explore and take in a variety of plants and shrubs. Elsewhere in the city you flower lovers will be happy to visit the favorite park of the locals - Belinsky Park. Here, kiddies can be entertained on the massive Ferris wheel whilst those on the search for local flora will be delighted to wander amongst the parks’ gardens and forest areas. The Park also affords a delightful view over the city and is also a popular spot for picnicking with family members while the children play.
