The fringe spider flower or Cleome rutidosperma is a tropical plant native to Africa. It is invasive but is typically left alone in the wild. Did you know that the Philippines also has an interesting plant called the ‘makahiya’? Its names came from the base word ‘hiya’ which means shy. It is aptly named so because the leaves close or fold when you touch them. The bias-bias or Benghal dayflower are herbs in the Philippines just as they are medicinal in China with anti-diuretic and anti-inflammatory. Pakistanis make use of this flowering plant as food for both humans and animals. The yellow woodsorrel has three known applications. It is edible but only in small quantities, is a natural source of dye, and is used to treat dry mouth.
