The city of Lille in northern France, close to the border with Belgium ,has been somewhat overlooked as a tourist destination. However in recent years there has been some regeneration which was recognised in 2004 when it became European City of Culture. Stand in the centre of La Grand Place and look up at the stunning architecture which can be admired in some of the wonderful old buildings. The 17th century Flemish style houses in the old town are also very impressive and will have the keen photographer snapping away! History buffs won’t lose out either as there several museums and art galleries the most important of which is Lille Museum of Fine Arts which just happens to come 2nd in popularity to the Louvre in Paris. Should a little downtime be needed then seek out the beautiful Vauban Garden which is a large park not far from the town centre. Relax in this distinctly English style garden with perfectly manicured lawns. Beautiful in any season, this park is a delight in the spring and is a riot of colour with tulips, hyacinths and forget-me-nots, not to mention the impressive oak, beech and hornbeam trees and wonderful variety of shrubs, apple and pear trees.
