Akita City is surrounded by natural beauty which makes it a refreshing change from so many of Japan’s mega metropolises.
In the city centre, Senshu Park is the green space located just a quick stroll from the nearest station. Cross the bridge as it extends over the moat. The water seems to have exploded with local lotus flowers in every direction. The Satake Castle used to be on the grounds, but now there are only ruins and a gate that has been restored for the enjoyment of visitors. The descendants of the clan decided to donate the property to the city of Akita so the public could enjoy the grounds.
Several peaceful temples and shrines are dotted throughout the park, with colourful flowers surrounding ponds and traditional Japanese water fountains blooming with colours. By climbing to the top of the park slope you can overlook the city with only a few trees to block the view. This is a popular spot for those who are interested in checking out the views, especially while grabbing a bit of a picnic.
In the Senshu Park itself there are several friendly “babahera” ice cream sellers, offering yellow and pink ice cream that has been sculpted into the shape of flowers.
Hang out at the park for the day, while you explore the ponds, shrines, meadows, and the ruins of the ancient Satake Castle. Akita is a beautiful place, with a delightful park brimming with flowers in the heart of the city.
