Al Minya is small city in Middle Egypt. I hosts a small museum to King Akhenaten who ruled Egypt from 1352 to 1336 BC. Akhenaton, changed his name from Amenhotep IV when he took power. He outlawed the old religions and made the worship of Aten, the sun god, the only religion in his territory.
Akhenaten was married to Nefertiti. The walls of the tombs show images of both Akhenaten and Nefertiti offering fresh lotus flowers in the worship of Aten. The Lotus flower symbolised creation, the sun, regeneration and rebirth to the ancient Egyptians. They believed that the heavenly scent was of a divine origin so they used it in many ceremonies and rituals while worshipping Aten.
The Lotus flower is high on the list of religious Symbols in the ancient Egyptian mythology. In ancient Egyptian art the Lotus flower was used as a symbol of the sun. The lotus flowers, or water lilies, open in the morning and close up at night, so they became a symbol of regeneration and rebirth.
Al Minyā won’t be high on most tourist attraction lists, and the town itself is not really set up to attract the tourism trade. There are 39 tombs in and near the town, but only 4 receive visitors.
You can see the images on the walls of the tombs that show the offerings of Lotus flowers made to Aten in Al Minyā. It may not be the most tourist friendly of all locations, but it may be the most memorable side trip you take.
