Situated a short distance from the sprawling city of Cairo, Bilbays has records dating back to 640 CE and is known for its many forts and well planned city defences. Bilbays is located a 1 ½ hour drive from Cairo, and is best visited as part of an organised tour that takes in several attractions. If Cairo is your base and you would like a break from the desert atmosphere you experienced in Bilbays then head to the International Park which has some lovely flowers and lush greenery. Elsewhere, the Al Horreya Garden offers shade under its glorious palm trees and well-manicured lawns. A worthwhile trip if you fancy it is a journey over to Gezira Island right in the middle of the Nile and accessible by bridge. The island features a well-known Garden of Plants and is a beautiful place in which to seek shade that is popular with locals and tourists alike. The city of Alexandria also has a Botanic Garden run by the botany team at the University, and features an interesting collection of cacti, palm trees and ferns.
