This charming city on the western coast of Tuscany is fairly modern in comparison to other towns and cities of the region. It’s large port is a gateway for travellers heading to Florence or Pisa having disembarked from the cruise ships which dock here. It's a great place to experience the food, music and culture of this part of Italy and kids will adore the aquarium filled with colourful fish and turtles. Visit Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum and contemplate its artwork or explore the Mascagnano Museum of music. If natural history appeals go and see some ancient relics in the Mediterranean Museum of Natural History. Explore the New Venice district with its canals, restaurants and shops. Take a boat trip around the town to see some of the sights from a different angle then having worked up an appetite you’ll have no problem finding a restaurant offering local cuisine. Take a stroll along the seafront and as you go pop in to one of the lovely parks along the route. Tuscany is a delight to behold in the springtime as it becomes a riot of colour. All over the region the wisteria with its heavy purple blooms will delight any artist or photographer and almost every garden comes to life with azaleas and camellias.
