As the name suggests Parma is most famous for its ham and as such is among the top places to eat in Italy. Locals are very proud to have this claim to fame and take eating very seriously. The Festa del Prosciutto celebrates the local ham while the annual Palio festival provides much merriment and competition between the surrounding districts. Be sure to check out the Duomo with its 16th century fresco by Antonio Allegri or the pink Verona marble Battistero shaped like an octagon. Just walk around this building and take in the wonder of the sculptures which can be dated back to the 12th century. Having eaten your fill of ham and cheese why not seek out a little peace and tranquility in one of Parma’s pretty parks? Parco Ducale is the most popular for those who fancy a stroll away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Botanic Gardens is well worth a visit if even just to see the beautiful little Parma violets with their delicate lavender flowers. The orchids are pretty too as well as the blooms on the mature magnolia trees which can be enjoyed in the springtime.
