Hagen is one of Germany's largest municipalities, located on the southeastern edge of the Ruhr area, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the rivers Lenne and Volme meet the river, Ruhr. Hagen is also home to several renown technical universities, including Fern University that came into existence in 1974 and became Germany's first distance-learning university. The city was one of the main targets of World War II and consequently suffered great damage. Fortunately, the city has been furnished into a modern urban destination with several parks, theatres and museums of art and local history.
