The city of Balakovo was founded in 1762 by the Old Believers (also called schismatics, because of their rejection of the church reform of the 1650s-1660s). Initially, it was a small Volga village inhabited by the Old Believers, whom the Russian tsarina Catherine II "asked" to return from abroad. Thanks to the convenient geographical position between the Bolshoy and Maly Irgiz rivers, the village expanded, and in 1911 the village of Balakovo was given the status of a city.
