In 1909, on the banks of the Ob River, loggers built a wooden pier and several peasant's houses. This is the beginning of the history of the city of Nizhnevartovsk. The houses gradually added, and in 1964 this settlement was given the status of a working village. A year later, an oil field was discovered near Lake Samotlor. People began to come to the village to work in the oil industry; the settlement began to grow, more and more. New houses were built and in 1972 the working town got the status of a city.
Now Nizhnevartovsk is part of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District. Its population is 274 thousand people (in 2017), and it is the second most populous city in the district.
Nizhnevartovsk is a city with developed industry; more than eighty percent of enterprises are in the oil and processing industry. The largest are OJSC SiburTyumenGaz, OJSC TNK-Nizhnevartovsk, Sibir Energy plc OAO NK Magma. Very often developed industry usually means poor ecology. Nizhnevartovsk is a rather polluted city; industrial waste pollutes the soil, river, and air. Outside the city, the situation is better.
Thanks to oil production, the city has become a major transport center-railroads, river transport have been developed. An airport operates flights not only across Russia but also abroad.
The climate of the city is continental, the winter is cold and long, the summer is cool, and the average air temperature in summer is 17 degrees above zero. Nizhnevartovsk is surrounded by forests (mostly coniferous), near the ciry there are many lakes and wetlands. In the heart of the city, there is the lake Komsomolskoye, a favorite place of rest for the townspeople.
The vegetable world of the city and the surrounding area is quite rich, a lot of cranberry, blueberry, cloudberry, can be found in forests. In the marshy area, there are many lilies, wild rosemary (which refers to medicinal plants), Ivan-tea. There are also poisonous plants- Núphar lútea, with large, bright flowers, rosemary, black henbane and others.
The flowerbeds of the city are decorated with varied flowers. Of course, they are mostly frost-resistant varieties, such as marigolds, saffron and petunia, violas, daffodils, and tulips. An interesting innovation - hanging flowerbeds decorated the street of Lenin and Chapaev. At the crossroads of Lenin and Marshal Zhukov, you can admire a huge pigeon made up of fresh flowers. This composition weighs more than a ton! Another composition of living floral characters is located at the crossroads of Lenin and Dzerzhinsky streets. It is called "Beast-musicians".
