In the city of Miyazaki-shi, Heiwa-dai Park offers a tranquil garden spot just a bit north of the town centre. Nature abounds outside the city, but the park on the hill with the 37 meter (over 120 feet) tall Tower of Peace is a special hideaway right inside the city limits.
To walk throughout the whole park takes about an hour. It is remarkably quiet, as if you are much further away from the city, in this tranquil forest. The wild flowers in the forest change through the seasons, but it is a special treat to see the first blooms every spring.
Most wild flowers in the forest start to bloom around the end of April or early in May each year. The first flowers can usually be spotted close to the sodden banks near the streams in the woods. Often the creeks and streams overflow with the winter runoff making the ground wet and ready for spring flowers. The Dog’s Tooth Violet, or Katakuri in Japanese, is a particularly lovely, and famous wild flower in Japan’s forests. Check the banks of the streams for the purple blooms, early in the spring.
The "Haniwa" statue garden sits close to the rest house in a small corner of the park. Haniwa are considered to be protection, plus decorations for the secret burial mounds. They were particularly popular from late in the 3rd century until the 7th century. About 400 statues line the walking paths through the forest. Each one is unique. Some are farmers, or their animals. It is worth the walk just to see the many different expressions on all the faces of the statues. Walk all the way to be sure you don’t miss the 400 year old wisteria flowers over in the Toshin garden.
