Hordel is a borough in Bochum and is home to the same plants and flowers that can be found growing in the city center. While this neighborhood might not have its own botanical garden this doesn’t mean that one can’t find plenty of flowers blooming throughout the year. At the end of winter residents delight in the appearance of edelweiss. Snowdrops and crocuses quickly follow, and then it is time for the tulips to appear. Red, yellow, white and purple tulips are common, along with the striped and fringed varieties. Orange and yellow marigolds are a favorite annual, along with dwarf and giant snapdragons. Rhododendrons of all sizes and colors can also be found in neighborhood plantings and in front of private residences. When someone in Hordel needs cheering up daisies and mums are often given as gifts, often times the flowers are cut from a resident’s personal garden. Another favorite with private gardeners are the tall hollyhocks, along with blue and purple delphium. The main city garden is not the only place one can find roses, and even climbers can often be found winding their way up trellises. The arrival of spring also brings out the lavender, and the scent of the light purple flowers fills the air.
