Chur is Switzerland’s most ancient town, and your first stop should be the Gothic Church followed by a visit to the museum to get a feel for its history. In fact, as the town is over five thousand years old there is plenty of old stuff to discover! The beautiful pedestrianized old town is an absolute must see and attracts tourists from all over the world. The town is also perfectly located for those who want to take in the alpine atmosphere as see some plants and shrubs native to Chur and the surrounding area. In the spring, a hike in the area near Chur will yield glimpses of crocuses and other spring flowers. Hiking in the region is definitely the best way to see local flora and fauna in and around Chur. If you however prefer a more formal selection of plants and shrubs, the city of Zurich is just over an hour away and features the stunning Old Botanical Garden. Opened in the 19th Century, the garden plays host to a palm house and lots of beautiful plants and shrubs. The Old Botanical Garden is known for its selection of splendid trees that give the place a wonderful atmosphere and some much needed shade in the summer months. Depending on the time of year you visit you will see azaleas, cherry trees and a selection of other native species of plants. If you have more time to spare in Chur why not treat yourself to a trip on the Bernina Express - 2 hours into the journey you can get off at the charming town of Poschiavo which is known for its floral treats, with formal gardens as well as flowers spilling over walls and through gates.
