Also known as Santiago de Chile, Santiago is both the largest city and the capital of Chile. The city is filled with museums and galleries, and located near the heart of the Santiago is the Parque Quinta Normal, which houses over six different museums including the Museo de la Memoria and de Historia. With its warm, tropical climate Chile is home to some of the world’s most beautiful plants and flowers, and the best place to see all of them is at Cerro San Cristobel. Located above Santiago, visitors can take advantage of the stunning views of the nearby Andes Mountains and also of the city’s skyline. Included in Cerro San Cristobel are the hidden Japanese Gardens where visitors can find delicate orchids and water lilies, and lacey red Japanese maple trees. Vibrant fuchsias , impatiens and wild geraniums are just a few of the flowering plants visitors will see growing along the paths. In the older part of Santiago lies Barrio Brazil, where the rainbow colored graffiti murals cover the crumbling buildings. Get a glimpse into Santiago’s past here, before heading back into the bustling city. Barrio Bellavista is where you will find all of the best bars and night clubs in Santiago. See where the locals go and wander through the winding side streets and don’t forget to stop and get one of the churrasco to nibble on while you are club hopping. The city’s most famous resident was the poet Pablo Neruda, and since his death his three houses have become a tourist attraction. The current favorite is his beautiful house, La Chascona, where visitors can see the poet’s extravagant homes and art collections. The Plaza de Armas is located in the heart of the city, and is a must see for every visitor. Sample some of the local food and shop for unique gifts and souvenirs, there is something for everyone in this bustling downtown square.
