Initially, the Cossacks founded the city of Bratsk in 1626 as the Bratsk burg. The burg itself appeared later, in this year just the first winter hut was built on the territory of the future city. Burg performed defense functions, gradually and slightly increasing in size, turning into a medium-sized settlement.
Only in 1946, at the same time that the construction of the power plant began, the village became a city. A large number of workers, engineers, and narrow specialists were required to build the power plant, called the Bratsk Hydroelectric Power Station. Then, at the end of construction, they settled in the city. Now, the population of Bratsk is 239 thousand people.
Bratsk is located in the central part of Eastern Siberia. The city is the administrative center of the Bratsk District of the Irkutsk Region. Due to its convenient geographical position, the city has become a major transport center - through it, there are major highways, railway. Water and air transport are also developed.
The climate of Bratsk is quite severe-cold, long winters (temperatures can reach 40 degrees below zero) are replaced by a short, but hot summer. The weather conditions of Bratsk can be compared with the conditions of the Far North.
Ecology of the city is also not very good, there are a lot of industrial enterprises in the city, including an aluminum plant, a timber plant, and a ferroalloy plant. Wastes from their production pollute the city air. Forest fires also worsen the ecology. However, there is a resort area near the Bratsk water reservoir, it is quite clean, and there is even a mineral spring nearby.
This territory is a paradise for the plant world, even in spite of the harsh climatic conditions. In the spring, the chamber begins to bloom, and then a lilac-pink rhododendron appears. Can be seen the bright red flaming flowers - it blooms Trollius. Later begin to blossom the orchid-lady's-slipper and others. Rarely, but you can also meet lilies.
But not only wildflowers are famous for the neighborhood of the city, on the beds of Bratsk was recently planted about 350 thousand ornamental flowers - marigolds, cineraria, petunias, lion's pharynx. Viola and phlox are planted in the center of the city. Despite the unpretentiousness of these flowers, the townspeople take care of them, and flowers please them with continuous flowering-some varieties are replaced by others, and so all summer!
