The desert city of Jirja is located on the banks of the River Nile and is home to the first Monastery constructed in Egypt. The area is famous for its clay products, and is known for its hot desert climate and extreme temperatures. There are several interesting historical sites in the area, including Beit Khallaf and its tombs, as well as its beautiful mosques. If you are on a tour of the Nile Delta on the way to Luxor, Jirja is an excellent place at which to stop. The area is best explored as part of an organised tour from Cairo or one of the holiday resorts in Egypt. If Cairo is your base and you would like a break from the desert atmosphere you experienced in Jirja then head to the International Park which has some lovely flowers and lush greenery. Elsewhere, the Al Horreya Garden offers shade under its glorious palm trees and well-manicured lawns. A worthwhile trip if you fancy it is a journey over to Gezira Island right in the middle of the Nile and accessible by bridge. The island features a well-known Garden of Plants and is a beautiful place in which to seek shade that is popular with locals and tourists alike.
