Ţanţā is a small town in Egypt built around a big, beautiful mosque. Cotton is the major product of the region, making the area known for a slow pace, and relaxed lifestyle. Annually, Ţanţā hosts a religiously based festival in October when people travel from miles around to feast on the famous candied nuts.
During the festival, individuals and organizations often decorate using flowers. Flower arranging is an ancient art in Egypt. There are archaeological ruins that suggest that flowers were part of the decor as far back as 2,500 BC. Cut flowers were, and are, placed in vases, often very large. The arrangements are used as household decorations, table centrepieces, in parades and for specific celebrations.
Ancient Egyptians are particularly known for their highly stylized flower arrangements, often designed to pay homage to a specific ancient god or goddess. They also included illustrations of the vases full of flowers in carvings or wall decorations painted at the time.
The festivals in Ţanţā draw people from near and far. Food, flowers and festivities make for a joyous combination.
