Situated in the Dakahlia province, Dekernes is a little known town just an hour from the provincial capital of Mansoura. Mansoura itself has several attractions, including the Mansoura National Museum which hosts some interesting historical artefacts from battles and wars. The nearby town of Belqas has some interesting old building and the beautiful Monastery of Saint Demiana. The area is best visited as part of an organised tour – there are plenty to join if your base is Cairo or Alexandria. If you are based in Alexandria during your stay in Egypt and are getting a bit tired of the dust and ruins near Dekernes and seek shelter from the heat of the day then head straight to Montazah Gardens. A veritable oasis in modern day Alexandria, the beautifully tended palace gardens offer shade amongst lush palms and colourful flowers, and there is even a little beach at the end. The gardens are the best place to seek solace from the noise and goings on in modern day Alexandria, and are a favourite place for locals and tour groups alike to take a stroll amongst its beautiful plants and flowers.
