The area around the castle is a favorite place amongst locals at which to watch the beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring months. Speaking of flowers, those on the lookout for some greenery should take in the Shukkeien Flower Gardens. This gorgeous and traditional Japanese garden features a variety of flowers, plants and shrubs including stunning azaleas and other vibrant flowers. Elsewhere, the Hiroshima Botanical Flower Gardens are a must see if you love plants and flowers. With an excellent selection of shrubs, the gardens host an annual rose festival on top of the traditional cherry blossom festival. There are also a few conservatories on site at which you can take in some more exotic plants that thrive in a humid environment. Pretty water lilies are on display here, as are some fruit trees. The Botanical Gardens are a pleasant oasis to explore, and also have an excellent viewing tower with some pretty good vistas over the surrounding area, so they are definitely worth a visit if you are in Hiroshima and the surrounding area. Make sure you bring your camera with you to take some photographs of the lovely blooms.
Hiroshima is best known in history for its nuclear past, but there is more to this city than just a former nuclear bomb site. Of course, you should head to the Memorial Site as part of your visit - it is situated at the only building that survived the blast and is a stark reminder of what an atomic bomb can actually do. The memorial park around the building is a pleasant place to take a stroll as well. The Mazda Museum is a good afternoon out for those who would like to know more about the cars’ history, and the rebuild Hiroshima Castle too offers a good place at which to take some photographs.
