Nilad and Jade vines (Strongylodon Macrobotrys) are a find in San Juan. They are green, hook-like flowers that endangered. They can yield up to 75 flowers.
It is believed in the Philippines that the name of the capital ‘Maynila’ or Manila came from the ‘nilad’ plant. The ‘nilad’ is a flowering tree that belongs to the family of santan flowers. They are mangrove trees that produce white flowers and are important water surge deterrents along the coastlines during bad weather. This tree thrives in Southeast Asia. Jade vines are related to kidney and runner beans. It is found deep in the Philippine tropical forests and locally known as Tayabak. The flowers are green and shaped like hooks. Bats pollinate this tree but propagating them is not easy at all. Currently, it is under watch as an endangered species because of their homes being destroyed. Aside from that, bats are also being affected, hindering them from doing their task when it comes to fertilizing such plants.
