In the 11th century, several fishing settlements were formed at the confluence of the rivers Volga, Sheksna, and Cheryomukhy. Gradually they grew up, united in the Fish Village, and in 1777 the tsarina Catherine the Great granted Rybinsk the status of the city. By this time the settlement became the capital of barge haulers and one of the largest storage and further grain transportation points. During the Soviet era, the city began to intensively build up and the then authorities decided to build a hydroelectric power station that would provide electricity to Rybinsk and neighboring cities.
