Built on several small islands that are intersected by canals Venice is a fascinating city. The city is home to historic churches and palaces that almost seem to float on the water, and even though land is limited residents of Venice still manage to keep beautiful gardens. Along the Grand Canal visitors and residents will find the Biennale Gardens, which also plays host to the city’s annual art festival. Along with tree lined walkways and small open green spaces one can also find wisteria blooming on arches. Purple coneflowers bloom alongside coreopsis and cosmos. During the cooler months visitors might even be able to catch a glimpse of heather. Anthurium leaves can also be found, along with large hostas. The garden’s greenhouses hold a collection of flowering cacti and delicate orchids. Venetians are also fond of roses, and hybrids and teas grow in both city and private gardens. While you won’t find mums except during times of mourning, gladioli, carnations and daisies are popular sights in the spring and summer. Many of these and other flowers can also be found for sale along the canals and in the plazas. Don’t be surprised if someone offers you a rose, and each color has its own special meaning.
