This Northern Italian city on the Crostolo River can trace it’s origins back to the 2nd century BC. It is also known as the Tricolour town because in 1797 it was here that the first tricolour flag was flown. Being steeped in history the province has several museums showing artefacts and art work of significant historical importance. The centre of the city is the shape of a hexagon and here the main buildings and monuments of historic interest can be found. There are four main squares – Piazza San Prospero, Piazza Fontanesi ,Piazza Del Monte with Piazza Prampolini otherwise known as Piazza Grande, being where the vibrant weekly market is held. Why not take the opportunity to visit nearby Parma? Home to the ham of the same name it’s a lovely town to explore. If visiting the region in May or June it’s well worthwhile making the short train journey from here to Fidenza where flower enthusiasts can see the wonderful spectacle that is the Infiorata Flower festival.This tradition involves carpets and pictures made from the petals of cornflowers, roses, marigolds, irises, magnolia, anemones, wild orchids and numerous other flowers being strewn on the streets. It is quite a sight to behold and the fragrance is wonderful!
