Smolensk, the administrative center of Smolensk Oblast, is one of the oldest Slavic towns. It is three hundred years older than Moscow. Although both of them are too young in comparison with ancient Kyiv that had owned those lands before the Mongolian Horde invaded in 1238. Then Smolensk belonged to different states. However, it was a stroke of luck that the town survived both Napoleon and Hitler. It was considered by them as the most reasonable point for invasion and subjugating the Russian empire and the Soviet Union respectively.
Nowadays, Smolensk is not the biggest, yet a very beautiful city with the population of 325 000. In here, various flowers and lilac blossoms having a heady aroma are everywhere in the springtime. But it seems that the urban insouciant life in the summertime moves closer to its central parks. There are several of them but the Lopatinskiy garden is the loveliest place not only for local residents but for the tourists as well. It is spectacular and melting to look at, still good enough to enjoy the simplicity. When the weather is sunny, you may encounter wedding ceremonies and see a groom and a bride cross the bridge inside the park. It is symbolic, isn’t it?
Another highlight of the park is its Ferris wheel which is surrounded by numerous flower beds. Each year there are different flowers planted. But daisies look especially stunning. Be sure to spend some time in this marvelous place!
