With Le Havre being a port city it can often be overlooked as an interesting place to visit. Holidaymakers arrive in droves disembarking from the ferries to continue their journeys to various holiday destinations. This is something of a shame because although this UNESCO world heritage site is generally not a holiday resort there is still lots to discover about its history and culture. Having sustained major damage during the second world war the architecture is now predominately modernist and has to be seen to be appreciated and understood. The octagonal tower of the Church of Saint Joseph and the amazing stained glass windows is a unique and incredible place to start your tour of Le Havre. Another example of impressive modern architecture is Le Volcan, a volcano shaped cultural centre. There is a lovely sea front promenade which is delightful in the summer months but if green space is more appealing escape to the hanging gardens which occupy the former 19th century port. It is a marvel to see how the four bastions of the fort are now spectacular themed gardens in the middle of which is a greenhouse filled with the scent of fragrant species and varieties of orchids and begonias.
