Toyama-shi is the country of Japan’s largest producer of tulips. The Toyama Prefecture has therefore made the tulip their official flower.

This makes for a wide collection of unique flower festivals in the Toyama area. Each spring there is a tulip flower festival right in the city of Toyama-shi. They display more than two and a half million flowers in creative and innovative ways. With millions of tulips in one town’s spring festivals, they will make you feel you are surrounded by these beautiful flowers.

Stroll in and amongst the vast garden beds planted with hundreds of tulips in different shapes and designs. Tulips are not known for their fragrances, as there isn’t any tulip perfume, but there is a Tulip Aroma Garden which showcases the aroma differences between the different types of blooms.

• The cultivation of tulip bulbs is not too new to the Toyama-shi area. The gardens were started in 1918, so the 100th anniversary is being celebrated in 2018. The unique observation decks offer a 360 degree panoramic from above the gardens to celebrate the event.
• The indoor Tulip Gallery is open all the year around so although the spring time two-week event is really worth seeing, if you miss it you can still come see the tulips in the indoor gallery.

The mini-scale bullet train ride will take you throughout the grounds to see the neatly planted rows of orange, red and yellow flowers. The walking path will lead you over bridges, and near the water wheels as you walk along the small river that runs through the park grounds.

Take in the live stage acts during the 2 week spring festival like the fashion show, singing and dancing performances.

Toyama-shi is the city at the heart of tulip flowers in Japan. The spring time Tulip Festival is worth attending.
