Spandau is small part of Berlin, located on the western banks of the Havel river. It is not only an epitome of historical wealth but also a highly modernised area. As a medieval fortress town discovered back in the 13th century, it has evolved drastically over the ages, with traces of its past found everywhere. The city is also embedded with refreshing greenery around South, where you can find the famous manor park at Gutspark Neukladow. The park is filled with rows of old trees and winding paths, making it an ideal location for a relaxing evening.

If you are interested in discovering the city's flora, the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum is a must visit. Located within the free university of Berlin, it stretches to an impressive area of 43 hectares and holds about 22,000 plant species. The gardens were designed by Adolf Engler. Interesting sights include:

• The geographical section, situated just west of the main path and surrounding the Italienischer Garten (Italian garden).
• The Karpfenpfuhl (carp pond), which is a pool of moraines that existed before the gardenns were established, and was extended with a second pond. It serves to display the water slide plants.
• A water and marsh bed with a whopping 262 basins of water sprinkling and draining the overflowing water, built out of cement concrete. It carries majority of the tropical marsh flora.

However, there aren’t as many floral varieties available since most of the city's native vegetation includes water slide plants.
