On the coast of the Adriatic Sea one can find the historic city of Bari, along with its spectacular flower gardens. The Foresta di Mercadante gives visitors a chance to see some of the local plants, and the trees provide plenty of welcome shade during the hot summers. Along with woodland ferns, hostas and violets, one can also find anthurium growing underneath the trees. The city’s warm and tropical climate also makes it ideal for growing hibiscus, and both single and double bloom varieties can be found in Bari. Like the rest of the country daisies are popular, along with roses. It is also not uncommon to find these and other flowers arranged in stunning floral displays. While trumpet lilies are frequent sights during Easter, and many shops and restaurants also use the fragrant flowers as decoration. Tulips and daffodils can be found blooming in the spring, and the summer brings out the asters. Bougainvillea vines can be seen climbing up trellis and walls, along with clematis and even a few morning glories. Large and small azalea bushes line many of the streets adding a bright touch of color when they are in bloom. Residents and visitors can also find these and other native flowers for sale in the city’s open air markets.
