Ravenna is a city steeped in history with many wonderful art collections to be viewed in it’s art galleries.The visitor to this historic city will be enthralled by the number of 5th and 6th century mosaics. While they are everywhere to be seen probably the best examples can be found in the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placida. Ravenna is a shopper's paradise with boutiques, perfumeries, art workshops, cafes, pizzerias...... in the streets of via Cavour, via Cairoll, via Corrado Ricci and many more. All the traditional, favourite Italian dishes are on offer in the cafes and restaurants along with local wines. Be sure to catch a concert during the Ravenna Music Festival held annually from May to July. The National Museum and the Basilica San Vitale are stunning venues in which to soak up jazz, classic, ethnic music and opera. Travel the 10 km northbound from Ravenna where you will discover the rather pleasant san Vitale Pinewood. There is a choice of trails to follow which will lead you to the amazing sight of trees such as pine, ash and white poplar with their trunks immersed in water. The lush forest floor is carpeted in blackthorn, dogwoods, broom, dog roses and many other plant species. Stop at one of the rest areas and enjoy a picnic lunch.
