Perugia is home to one of the oldest universities in Italy and as such has a vibrant cafe culture set against a backdrop of Gothic, Etruscan and medieval foundations. There are several museums for history buffs wanting to learn more about the origins of this capital of the Umbria region. A super way to get your bearings is by taking a bus tour of the main town centre and by so doing find out about the most important buildings and monuments. Within the Etruscan city walls are a number of gates, each unique in their importance, with Porta Marzia with it’s southern orientation being of particular significance in the 3rd century BC. Yet within these city walls steeped in history the visitor will discover a lively, modern atmosphere with cosy restaurants and pavement bars and cafes. During the annual summer jazz festival the centre of Perugia really comes to life with outdoor stages for performances by various artists. Take a short train journey to the medieval town of Spello for the religious flower festival if your visit happens to fall 60 days after Easter Sunday. This tradition involves carpets and pictures made from the petals of cornflowers, roses, marigolds, irises, magnolia, anemones, wild orchids and numerous other flowers being strewn on the streets. It is quite a sight to behold and the fragrance is wonderful!
