Apparently, Mackay is the best base in Oz from which to see a duck billed platypus. Just over an hours drive away you will be able to see the platypuses chilling in the water. Speaking of wildlife, there is also a location near Mackay where you can see kangaroos on the beach! Head to Cape Hillsborough National Park for this attraction - you can even book a room here to be sure you have the best viewing spot for the marsupial action in the morning. If you are into the great outdoors then head to the Pioneer Valley which will afford you with fabulous views of the whole area. This is surely a great spot at which to take photographs. Speaking of the outdoors, Mackay is also a great base from which to explore floral attractions of the area. Head to Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens for some floral treats. In the spring months, you can check out the Lemon Scented Myrtle, which gives off an amazing scent. The vibrant flame tree can also be seen here and is a sheer delight, with the red blooms making for a striking photograph opportunity. There are plenty of other floral treats waiting for you at the Mackay Botanic Gardens, including orchids - the Christmas and Golden Orchid to name but a few. And all year round you can be sure to see the Golden Everlasting Daisy. These flowers usually bloom from autumn into summer and are a favorite host of little winged creatures such as butterflies and bees. Keep your camera handy when in Mackay and snap up these photo opportunities as you go. You will also be able to take on several wildflower trails in the area - these give a welcome break from city life and get you out into the great outdoors.
