Even though this is a borough in Hamburg, the neighborhood of Wandsbek has its own personality. This is evident in the flowers that can be found growing in private and public gardens. With its close proximity to the Wandse River the area is perfect for growing many native flowers. Some of these include edelweiss in the early spring, along with snowdrops and pretty crocus. The cooler spring weather is also ideal for growing lavender, and the purple spikes can be seen blooming throughout the city. Marigolds are also popular and these yellow and orange flowers can be found growing in pots in front of shops. Tall gladioli are also popular, along with full size and mini carnations. Daisies and carnations are commonly given as gifts to friends and loved ones, along with fragrant lilies and roses. It is hard to find a garden without one rose bush, and red is a favorite with locals. The pretty suburb even boasts several large rhododendron bushes, which bloom throughout the spring and summertime. Along some of the neighborhood streets one can also find tall red and yellow canna in bloom, often with dusty miller growing in front.
