Even though Ivanovo might look like a city that has lost its former glory, it is still worth taking a look at its sightseeing. This administrative center of the Ivanovo region with the population of 405 000 people is located 290 kilometers northeast of Moscow which is the capital city of the Russian Federation. Tourists from all over the world attend Ivanovo more often than other cities in Central Russia as it is the main part of the so-called Tourist Golden Ring.
Due to the fact that Ivanovo has been the heart of the textile industry since the 18th century, almost always it is referred as either the city of brides-to-be or Russian land of printed cotton.
The center between three local universities is a romantic place where the monument to the Bride’s crystal shoe has been set up. The framework of the construction is traditionally decorated with flowers in the summertime and replaced with various garlands in the late Fall of a year. Each year there are crowds of local dwellers and tourists from around the world gathered to see a show called The Runaway Bride. Hundreds of young girls in wedding dresses walk down the main street. Each and every man they meet – however old or young he is - must be given a special present. Participants bestow red roses on veterans of the WWII, daisies on middle-aged men and tulips on the youth. Then all of them gather together for a collective photo. It goes without saying that a photo is taken by the Bride’s crystal shoe.
And don’t be offended if you are said that the best souvenir from Ivanovo is a bride. That’s just a joke.
