Castle Bromwich Hall gardens are so spectacular that they hold “Draw the Gardens” events. What’s that, you say? Well, you go to the Castle, and meet with artists who are drawing pictures of the plants in the gardens. You can draw too, if you want, but it is billed as a relaxed event so you can just watch, if that is your preference.
The other unique aspect of the Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens is the kitchen gardens they have named the Batty Langley. In these special vegetable gardens they use companion planting organic techniques to grow food without chemicals. They are using centuries old techniques of pairing plants together so they are supported in their growth cycles. There are hundreds of plants that grow especially well in the same beds as other plants, and just as many that you can hinder or even kill by planting them next to the wrong neighbour.
One of the most well known companion planting systems around the world is called “The Three Sisters”. This is when you plant corn, climbing beans and winter squash all together. The corn acts as a pole for the beans to climb, the beans provide nitrogen into the soil like fertilizer, and the squash provides a ground cover so the roots of the corn and beans have a chance to get established.
In order to keep pests away from companion planted gardens most often gardeners plant a multitude of flowers and herbs, which provide a distraction or deterrent for the pests.
