Gladstone is a place for water lovers. That means those who love swimming, scuba diving , jet skiing and snorkeling. It is also a prime destination for those who love to surf Australian style! There are plenty of surf schools in the area, all of which give excellent instruction. You can also try your hand here at fishing if you wish, there are a couple of great places to try out such as Boyne Island for one. This area is part of the Great Barrier Reef, so you can arrange tours to see some of the wonderful sea life that inhabit the shores. Think clown fish, turtles and even dolphins. It's a nature watchers dream! If you love the great outdoors there are some more attractions for you on the doorstep of Gladstone. The area is home for example to over two hundred different sorts and species of wildflowers, ranging from the beautiful to the simply weird! If you have time, head to the Bunya Mountain National Park. This park offers a twelve kilometre trail along which you are sure to see the wonderful king orchids that flower here. Elsewhere, the Girraween National Park is also worth a visit. Here, you have literally hundreds of different sorts of wildflowers in bloom here throughout the spring. You will be able to see hyacinth orchids as well as beautiful bluebells. There are a few groups in the area that offer wildflower viewing walks, such as the Stanthorpe Consortium. These are informative tours that take in not only the standard wildflowers on the trails but also talk you through some of the endangered plants in the area and what is being done to protect them Finally, a trip to Goondiwindi will take you through the Aboriginal uses for plants and trees in local medicine - this is particularly interesting and well worth it if you can make the trip.
