A Local Nature Reserve has to go through a qualification process to determine that it is specifically important for not only public enjoyment, but also education, geology and for the wildlife. There has to be unique opportunities or what you have is a park, and not a Local Nature Reserve, at all.

The Telford Town Park is more than just a park, it is a Local Nature Reserve. It not only has flowers and broadleaf trees, children’s play areas, pools, grasslands and hiking trails, but also 162 hectares of certified peaceful learning grounds for study and enjoyment of the natural environs.

The park has a long history of industry. With quarry pits and spoil mounds in the recent past the quarries have magically become delightful ponds and lakes. The old railway and the canal are now lined with hedges and scrubs throughout the park’s grounds. All of this now supports a biodiverse environment for the bats, reptiles, amphibians, and a multitude of species of birds.

The Chelsea Gardens at the north end of the park were built as an exhibit for the Chelsea Flower Show.

The Friends of Telford Town Park developed a sensory garden back in 2014. By 2016 there was funding finally available for the restoration of the garden’s main fountain. All of the plants and sculpture are planned to include the water features, sculptures, benches, raised beds and an herb garden.

The park in the town centre of Telford is often much bigger than people expect. Walk around the lakes, check out the climbing wall, the flower gardens and see what nature has to offer.
