Shibin El Kom or Shibin al Kawm is shortened by the local residents to just Shibin. An ancient city in the Nile Delta, the infrastructure is in the process of being modernized. Small lakes and nice flower gardens are common in the city in residential locations, and around restaurants or hotels. Some of the lakes even make a home for ducks.
The anemone flower is a favourite in the area. Native to more temperate climates, the ancient Egyptians worked hard to maintain their flower gardens. The brightly coloured perennial flowers with long stems, ideal for using in vases in pyramids, or creating garlands to wear about the head or neck.
The name anemone comes from the Greek word anemoi, which means “winds” in English. Ancient Roman mythology states that it was the goddess Venus who created the flowers when she sprinkled the nectar on her lover, Adonis.
Surely this is not the explanation for the creation of the anemone flowers used in ancient Shibin al Kawm.
