The peaceful city of Matsumoto is well worth a visit. Boasting an excellent museum of art and the famous (and stunning) Matsumoto castle, there is plenty to explore. The beginning of spring in the Matsumoto area is marked by the appearance of the yellow fukujuso flower, which is at its most striking in and around Shiga. Matsumoto is also home to splendid displays of color in the spring. From the usual cherry trees blooming in the early months to stunning wisteria and lilacs, the town and surrounding hillsides are awash with color. Matsumoto is just one hour from Nagano. Nagano city itself is dotted with flowers all around – beautiful trailing wisteria, fragrant lavender displays and gorgeous lilies offer a feast for the senses, and if you take a trip up into the hills you will also be rewarded with fresh mountain flowers on display throughout the summer period. A favorite place to view the native nanohana blossoms, you will be blessed with so many beautiful flowers in Nagano! The flower festival in May and the Nanohana Festival showcases the yellow rape seed for which the area is famous.
