On the outskirts of Osaka, Neyagawa is conveniently located and within easy reach of many of the area’s attractions. From the Osaka National Park or the Aquarium, to Universal Studios Japan or the local markets, there are plenty of things to see and do when in Neyagawa. Neyagawa is also very close to Hirakata and its flower-related attractions. Perhaps the best flowers to see in Hirakata are the famous dolls decorated with the Hirakata’s city flower at the annual chrysanthemum festival. A delightful display, these dolls have been covered in beautiful flowers since a tradition began early in the 19th century of creating scenes from Japanese folklore and tales. Interestingly, Chrysanthemums play such a key part in the flower culture of Hirakata that the sign language for the city of Hirakata is the shape of the flower itself. [ii] If you miss the seasonal exhibition don’t despair, there are plenty of other flowers to see in Hirakata. Why not head to the Yamadaike Park for its beautiful display of cherry trees and plum blossoms in the springtime – definitely the best time to visit – or the wonderful displays of other local plants and flowers such as irises and plum trees year-round?
