The city of Syzran was founded in 1683 as a military fortress. The fortress was located on the Volga River, in the place where the Syzranka River ran into it. The fortress served to protect the trade caravans that cruised East to the West and back. Like almost every fortification, the fortress grew over time, and in 1796 the settlement received the status of a city. At the end of the nineteenth century, a railway was built across Syzran, which gave an even greater impulse to its development.
